Kelly Hyman (Plaintiff)


Kelly Hyman is Alex Daoud’s estranged daughter. She’s a former child actress and is currently a personal injury attorney at the high-powered Palm Beach law firm of Searcy Denney Scarola Barnhart & Shipley.

Kelly Hyman earned a Bachelors degree in communications from UCLA and her Master’s degree in communications from Barry University in Miami. While studying for her undergraduate degree, she served as a White House Intern with the Office of Presidential Inquiries. In 2003, she was awarded a J.D., with honors from the University of Florida College of Law.

Kelly Hyman is a member of The Florida Bar, the Federal Bar for the Southern District of Florida, and the Palm Beach County Bar Association.





Alex Daoud (Defendant)

Alex_DaoudAlex Daoud is the former three-time Mayor of Miami Beach. He is also the author of Sins of South Beach, a blistering expose of the graft and corruption underpinning America’s most decadent resort.

Alex Daoud attended the University of Tampa, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Literature, then received his Juris Doctor degree from Northern Illinois University before returning to his home of Miami Beach to begin practicing law.

Alex Daoud lives in Miami Beach and manages luxury rental properties in South Beach.





Paul Hyman Jr. (Federal Judge & Kelly Hyman’s Spouse)

federal_judge_paul_hymanPaul Hyman Jr. is Kelly Hyman’s husband. He is the Chief Judge for the United States bankruptcy court, Southern District of Florida. He assumed his position as chief judge in 1993.

Judge Paul Hyman Jr. graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1974 with a Bachelors degree in Economics and from the University of Miami School of Law in 1977 with his Juris Doctor.

Paul Hyman practiced commercial litigation from 1977 to 1979 at Britton Cohen Kaufman & Schantz in Miami, Florida. After 1979, he became an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida. In 1981, Hyman returned to Britton Cohen Kaufman & Schantz, where he represented debtors, creditors and trustees. In 1983, Hyman moved to Denver, Colorado to join the firm of Holme Roberts & Owens.

He married Kelly Hyman in 2011.





Bernardo Burstein (Attorney For The Plaintiff)

Brito has also served as an arbitrator in actions between franchisees and franchisors. He is a member of the Florida Bar and is admitted to practice in Unites States District Courts for the Southern District of Florida, Middle District of Florida, Northern District of Illinois, and the Eastern District of Wisconsin, as well as the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, Sixth Circuit, Ninth Circuit, and Eleventh Circuit.





Judge John Thornton Jr.

Judge_John_ThorntonJohn Thornton Jr. is a judge in Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court, Civil Division, who ruled in Alex Daoud’s favor in the case of Kelly Hyman v Alex Daoud. He was appointed to the position by former Florida Governor Charlie Crist in July,2007.

Judge John Thornton received his B.A. degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1974 and his J.D. degree from the University of Miami in 1977.

John Thornton began his career in 1977 as an assistant state attorney. In 1980, he joined the law firm of Thornton & Rothman, P.A., where he served until his appointment to the circuit court in 2007. He has also taught as adjunct faculty at the University of Miami School of Law since 1995.
